This recap activity will use data file w2 recap activity.sav. You will review and demonstrate your skills in using SPSS syntax, performing data transformation, and obtaining appropriate descriptive statistics for categorical and continuous variables.
This recap activity has three parts: data transformation, descriptive statistics, and a writing practice. Familiarize yourself with the variables in the data, then perform the following.
1. Data transformation
• Recode ethnic into a new variable ethnic5 with five categories:
o 1 = Hispanic/Latino
o 2 = Black
o 3 = Asian and Pacific Islanders
o 4 = White
o 5 = Other (include Native American, multiracial, and “other”)
• Use the scoring instructions for ATSQ on page 2, create four subscale scores for statistics attitudes. Name the scores as inadequate, useless, enjoy, and technical, respectively.
• Use the scoring instructions for statistics anxiety, create a new variable anxiety
that measures statistics anxiety.
2. Descriptive statistics
• Obtain appropriate descriptive statistics for age, gender, and ethnicity (for ethnicity, use the new variable ethnic5 you created in Step 1.
• Obtain appropriate descriptive statistics for the four statistics attitude scores
inadequate, useless, enjoy, and technical, and the statistics anxiety score.
3. Writing practice (APA style 7th edition is required)
• Create a title page for a student paper reporting an imaginary study that examined college students’ attitudes toward statistics and performance (in other words, make up a title for the imaginary paper).
• Write a Participant section, include information about the number of participants, their age (range, mean, standard deviation), gender, and ethnicity. For the purpose of this write-up, you may describe the participants as “undergraduate volunteers who were enrolled in an advanced methods and statistics course at a large public university.”
• Create a table to report the descriptive statistics for the four statistics attitudes and statistics anxiety. Include the minimum, maximum, mean, and standard deviation for each variable. Round all numbers to 2 decimal points.
Submit
• the SPSS syntax file (The syntax file should include proper comments for the syntax commands. Name the file as Syntax_w2recap_LastName.sps).
• the MS WORD file (The WORD file should include the title page, the participants paragraph, and the table. Name the file w2recap_writeup_LastName.docx).
Scoring Instructions
Attitudes Towards Statistics Questionnaire (ATSQ, Mills, 2004)
Before scoring the ATSQ, reverse code items 4, 22, and 23: (1 = 7, 2 = 6, 3 = 5, 4 = 4, 5 = 4, 6 =
2, 7 = 1)
Calculate a mean score for each subscale:
• inadequate “I am not good at statistics”
Items: 2, 4 (reversed), 10, 19, 20, 22 (reversed), 23 (reversed), 26. A high score indicates a strong belief that “I am not good at statistics”.
• useless “Statistics is not useful”
Items 3, 5, 11, 18, 24. A high score indicates a strong belief that “statistics is not useful or relevant”.
• enjoy “I enjoy learning statistics”
Items 1, 7, 14. A high score indicates a strong belief that “I enjoy learning statistics”.
• technical “Statistics is highly technical”
Items 13, 21, 25. A high score indicates a strong belief that “statistics is highly technical and difficult”.
Statistics Anxiety Scoring Instructions
Calculate a mean score of the 10 anxiety questions. No reverse code is necessary. A high score indicates a higher level of statistics-related anxiety.
