INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES
ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS

A 1500-word quantitative data analysis report (35%). Although the word count states 1500 words, it is the content and completeness of information that matters the most. Therefore, do not worry if you are below 1500 words if you think you have covered everything. Likewise, do not worry if you exceed the 1500 words (though being

unnecessarily wordy won’t give you extra marks).

Based upon the methodological details presented on the next page, and the SPSS dataset provided, use SPSS to test the hypotheses provided.

Important: The report must also include your SPSS output for each analysis conducted (add this as an Appendix in the end of the report). You can copy-paste SPSS output into a word document in the same way you copy-paste any image. Alternatively, you can use the snipping tool.

The analytical report aims to develop research skills required for quantitative data analysis.

This assessment item will assess Learning Outcomes 4, 5, 7, & 8

4. Use a range of methodologies including information technology to gather, organize and reference research effectively.

5. Communicate complex issues both systematically and creatively using a scientific writing style.

7. Use electronic statistics software package to evaluate, summarise and make inferences with research data.

8. Make extensive use of information technology to write, analyse and report research findings.

 The Sample

Your sample comprises 227 participants (both male and female) with chronic low back pain (CLBP).

There are 3 groups in your sample: One group of young adults, one group of older adults, and one group of the elderly. Sample descriptives (age and ethnic background can be found in the SPSS database).

SPSS Variables Explained

Age: Each participant’s age.

Ethnicity: Each participant’s ethnicity.

Group: Which group each participant belongs to: 0 = young adults

1 = older adults 2 = the elderly

Quality of Life: Each participant’s total score on a questionnaire measuring pain

related quality of life. Higher scores → better quality of life.

Anxiety: Each participant’s total score on a questionnaire measuring anxiety levels.

Higher scores → more anxiety.

Depression: Each participant’s total score on a questionnaire measuring depression

levels. Higher scores → more depression. 3

For this report, you need to do the following:

1. Describe your sample. Report the descriptives of the sample for each group separately (sample size, age, and ethnicity).

2. Conduct the appropriate statistical tests to explore the below 4 research questions. For each research question, you need to identify which statistical test (of the ones covered in this module) should be used, conduct this, and fully report and explain the findings, as you would do for an academic journal.

Research Question 1: You want to explore whether there is an association between pain related quality of life, anxiety, and depression (i.e., whether these 3 variables are associated with each other). Assume all assumptions for the test you are using have been met. Report and interpret the results.

Research Question 2: You want to explore whether there is an association between pain related quality of life and depression, while controlling for anxiety. Assume all assumptions for the test you are using have been met. Report and interpret the results.

Research Question 3: You want to explore whether young adults and older adults differ in their levels of pain related quality of life. Assume that the assumption of normality of distribution has been met. Report and interpret the results.

Research Question 4: you want to explore whether all 3 groups differ from each other on all 3 variables (pain related quality of life, anxiety, depression). Assume that the assumption of normality of distribution has been met. Report and interpret the results.

3. Provide a concise summary of all the findings. Do not repeat numbers – use prose only. Imagine you are writing this for a reader who does not know statistics. Explain what your results say.
