End of Introduction section/Hypotheses

The purpose of this study is to investigate the common characteristics of a paranormal believer.  This study researched the following hypotheses:

1.)Women will believe in paranormal beliefs more so than men do.

2.)Younger people will believe in paranormal beliefs more so than older people do.

3.)Individuals with a low need for cognition will believe in paranormal beliefs more so than those with high need for cognition.

4.)Of the variables gender, age, and need for cognition, age will be the largest predictor of paranormal beliefs.

 The Paranormal:  Who Believes? 2

Method

Participants

A total of ________ participants completed a survey.  Of these participants, ________ were college students from a small, Midwestern, private college.  The other _______ participants were members of an Elder Hostel class.  _________% of the participants were male and _________% were female.  The  college students ranged in age from _______--- _______.  The Elder Hostel class ranged in age from ______-- __________.

Survey

Paranormal beliefs.  A _____ item survey was distributed to all of the participants.  The questions were broken down into two sections.  The first section asked participants to rate their beliefs in certain paranormal beliefs.  The responses on all of the sections ranged from 1 (not at all agree) to 7 (strongly agree).  A total was created with the total ____items.  This total had a mean of __________ and a possible range of __________-__________ and an actual, observed range of __________-__________.

Need for Cognition.   The second section of questions had individuals rate their Need for Cognition.  These questions were based on Cacioppo and Petty’s Need for Cognition scale (1982). _________ of the items had to be recoded.   A total was created with the _____ items.  This total had a mean of __________ and a possible range of __________-__________ and an actual, observed range of __________-__________.

Procedure

During a college class or an Elder hostel class, the same instructor gave participants a survey.  The survey took approximately 10 minutes to complete.  Participants were told that the surveys were anonymous and they could skip any items they did not want to complete.  At the end of the survey, the participants were debriefed about the purpose of the study.

Results

Gender and age t-tests to assess differences in paranormal beliefs.

Gender and paranormal beliefs.  To assess the first hypothesis, a t-test was conducted comparing men and women on the paranormal total.  The mean for men was __________ and the mean for women was __________ (t = __________, p = __________).

Age and paranormal beliefs.  To assess the second hypothesis, a t-test was conducted comparing younger and older participants on the paranormal total.  The mean for younger people was __________ and the mean for older people was __________ (t = __________, p = __________).

Need for cognition and paranormal beliefs correlations

To assess the hypotheses regarding Need for Cognition and beliefs, a Pearson correlation coefficient was calculated.

Need for Cognition and Paranormal Beliefs.   The need for cognition scale was correlated with the paranormal belief total (r= __________, p = __________).

Finally, a regression analyses was conducted with gender, age, and Need for Cognition regressed onto the paranormal belief total.  The overall R2 for this regression was ______.  The following variables were regressed on the belief total gender (Beta= _______, p = _________), age (Beta= _______, p = _________), Need for Cognition (Beta= _______, p = _________).

Discussion

Based on the results, for each of the hypotheses were they supported, were they significant, or not?

1.) Women will believe in paranormal beliefs more so than men do.

2.) Younger people will believe in paranormal beliefs more so than older people do.

3.) Individuals with a low need for cognition will believe in paranormal beliefs more so than those with a high need for cognition.

4.) Of the variables gender, age, and need for cognition, age will be the largest predictor of paranormal beliefs.
