Write a 1-1.5 page essay that responds to the following prompt:
In The New Jim Crow, Alexander argues that systemic racism still persists in the post-Civil Rights era of the United States. Rather than overt racism that allows for open hostility and contempt for racial groups, systemic racism is insidious and often hidden racism that exists within the functioning of various civil institutions (i.e. the criminal justice system). It cannot be denied that systemic racism is an immoral and unethical practice, but it is sometimes difficult to spell out exactly why something is immoral or unethical. In your estimation, why is systemic racism immoral and unethical and what effect does systemic racism have on the global community? (Hint: if you are having trouble, think about how important the concept of justice is on morality and ethics)
I will be evaluating you based on your:
1 Explanation of systemic racism using quotations from The New Jim Crow
2 Providing an account as to why systemic racism is immoral or unethical
3 Defending/supporting (2)
4 Providing insight into the global implications of systemic racism within the United States (hint: think of the impact of Black Lives Matter across the globe)
