Quantitative Research Project Design, Data and Methods Assignment
Identify a research topic that can be addressed using quantitative methods and one of the allowed data
sources (ACS, PSID, or GSS). Then, select at least 7 variables you will include in your analysis: 1 dependent/outcome variable, 1 key independent variable, 5+ control variables, and potentially 1+ selection criteria variable
(the variable you will need to identify the sample you want to study like rural status if you want to study
rural residents). Note that race/ethnicity counts as 1 variable despite the fact that you will split it into 3-
4 binary variables in the analysis. Download an extract of the data with the needed variables and write 3
pages providing each of the items below.
Assessment Criteria
Research topic
State one clear, specific, detailed research question and your preliminary hypothesis.
Background information & sources:
Provide 2-4 bullet points of background that an audience member should understand about the topic
in order to understand your research study. Each point should be backed up with a citation. Use at
least 2 different sources for this section, where at least 1 is a peer-reviewed source.
Data and Sample description:
Provide 1-2 paragraphs, or 4-6 bullet points, describing the data source and the sample you are
studying (e.g. rural residents, middle-aged adults). Make sure to state how many observations will be
analyzed in your study.
Table of Descriptive Statistics:
Provide a mean, standard deviation, minimum, and maximum for all measures that will be included in
your analysis. Make sure the table can be understood without reading any text (complete labels, units
(e.g. percent, years, miles, etc.)). Format the table so that it is professional looking (e.g., same number
of digits after the decimal point).
Description of key variables:
Provide 2-3 paragraphs, or 7+ bullet points, describing each of your variables. Make it clear whether
the variables are continuous, binary, or ordered categorical. Describe how you transformed any
variables (e.g., created 4 binary variables from an unordered categorical variable). Provide the
question wording or detailed description of what the variable includes if it is not obvious (e.g., how is
closeness with parent measured? wealth including home equity or not?). Then, provide some brief
text interpreting the table of descriptive statistics (focus on the means).
Methods description
Provide a regression equation with text explaining the components of the equation. Explain how your
regression tests your hypothesis. State that you will be employing ordinary least squares.
Stata log file:
Your log file should include your Stata commands and the output that Stata provides in response to
each command. All figures in your table should be shown in the log file
