INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES
ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS

The assignment needs to be online by midnight of November 19th, Montreal Time. Unless you meet an exception criterion that has already been discussed with the instructor, no late assignment is accepted. If you have a scheduling conflict on the day when the assignment is due, make sure to submit your assignment beforehand.

You are expected to submit a write-up of your results, which includes two different documents:

a) The answers to the questions in a Word document (or other text editor). The answers include the values you obtained, the tables or graphs as required, the motivation behind your choices, and the interpretation of your results.

In the case of tables, you can cut and paste the table you obtained from Stata. However, if you choose to do so, make sure the formatting of the table does not change as you cut and paste from Stata to Word. To preserve a good Stata layout after you paste the Table in Word, you can choose the font “Courier New” and pick a font size of 9 or 10 depending on how big the table is. Sometimes, it might be easier to create a new table in Word/Excel and input the values obtained from Stata in the cells – this is your choice, but keep in mind that the information needs to be presented in a clear and organized manner (if things are not presentable/clear you may lose marks).

In the case of graphs, you should also be able to copy and paste them (no screenshots). Title your graph and label your axes.

b) Your do-file with the syntax you used and your work directory. Organize your do-file in a clean manner, and feel free to add comments and notes to it.

For all other concerns, refer to the Evaluation Guidelines file posted on MyCourses. For all answers, you can round values to one or two decimals (e.g. a number such as 2.1654 can be rounded up to 2.2 or 2.16).

You can discuss the assignment with other students in the class, but you must write it up independently. Both the write-up and the do-file need to be written independently. Any deviation from this constitutes cheating.

Imagine you are a researcher seeking to learn about some aspects of Canadian families. You are interested in their economic wellbeing, marital status, and some aspects of their time use. Regarding the latter, you are specifically interested in the time allocated to paid work activities, to household chores and to the care of children. For your analyses, you employ Statistics Canada’s Labour Force Survey and their General Social Survey, 2015: Time Use (GSS 2015). The GSS 2015 dataset posted to MyCourses has been modified so as to only contain cases of families with children less than 19 years of age. A modified Codebook has also been posted to Stata Resources/GSS 2015. The info on the LSF is also still available on MyCourses

Use Stata and the 2 datasets to answer the following questions:

Question 1 [30 pts] – USE LFS data

[If applicable, explain and show details of any calculation you obtained. If using tables, construct tables with proper categories. If applicable, round results to two decimals. In the do file, specify the syntax you used.]

You are interested in knowing whether there are gender disparities in paid work activities. That is, you want to determine whether hourly wages vary by sex. For each sub question, make sure to select the appropriate subsample.

a) Construct a graph or a table (or both, if you deem it useful) that displays the relationship between sex and hourly wages. Make sure to use a graph or table that is appropriate to the level of measurement of the variables you are analyzing (5pts).

b) Using the graph or/and table constructed in part a), discuss and interpret your results. Assess whether your results indicate a relationship between sex and hourly wages, and the direction of the association if it exists (5pts).

c) You wish to estimate the mean personal income by sex in the Canadian population. Use an alpha level of 0.05 and construct a confidence interval for the mean Hour wages for both groups of. In your words, explain the procedure you undertook. Construct an appropriate table with your results, then discuss and interpret the values you obtained (10 pts).

d) Based on some reading you did in another class; you think that women are likely earning less than their male counterparts. Set up a hypothesis test (using the 5-step model) and determine if this hypothesis is supported by your data.

Question 2 [15 points]– LFS Data

[If applicable, explain and show details of any calculation you obtained. If using tables, construct tables with proper categories. If applicable, round results to two decimals. In the do file, specify the syntax you used.]

You are also interested in knowing about where Canadians live as you suspect that those living in Quebec will have different experiences than those living in the rest of Canada.

a) Using the Province variable, create a new variable whose values are grouped in two new categories: 0 for those living in Quebec; 1 For those living outside of Quebec. Report the proportion of people living in Quebec (5pts)

b) Construct a confidence interval showing roughly what proportion of Canadians are actually living in Quebec based on your sample. Interpret your results (5pts)

c) Based on Canadian census data you know that about 23% of the Canadian population lived in Quebec in 2010. You want to know if that many Canadians are still living in Québec. Set up a hypothesis test (using the 5-Step Model and explain if you have enough evidence to suggest that the proportion of people living in Quebec has changed over the last 10 years. (5pts)

Question 3 [25 pts] – USE GSS Data

[If applicable, explain and show details of any calculation you obtained. If using tables, construct tables with proper categories. If applicable, round results to two decimals. In the do file, specify the syntax you used.]

Now you are interested in whether marital status varies by educational attainment among families with children. For instance, you might be interested in knowing whether the more highly educated are more likely to be married, a long-standing question of interest in the social sciences.

a) Using the EHG_ALL variable (Highest educational attainment), create a new education variable whose values are grouped in two new categories: 1-Less than a bachelor’s degree; 2-University degree (including bachelor’s degree and university certificate, degree or diploma). Be careful that there might be missing values in the original variable that should also remain missing in the newly created one. Create and assign proper labels for both the new variable and its values (5pts).

b) Construct a graph or a table (or both, if you deem it useful) that displays the relationship between educational attainment and marital status. Make sure to use a graph or table that is appropriate to the level of measurement of the variables you are analyzing (5pts).

c) Using the graph or table constructed in part b), discuss and interpret your results. Assess whether your results indicate a relationship between educational attainment and marital status, and the direction of the association if it exists (5pts).

d) Now set-up and run a “formal” hypothesis test (Chi-Square). Interpret your results. (10pts)

Question 4 [30 points] – GSS data

[If applicable, explain and show details of any calculation you obtained. If using tables, construct tables with proper categories. If applicable, round results to two decimals. In the do file, specify the syntax you used.]

You are now interested in knowing whether the time spent doing household chores and what that tells you about family dynamics.

a) Obtain an appropriate graph that indicates that shows duration of household chores. Make sure to use a graph that is appropriate to the level of measurement of the variables you are analyzing (5pts).
