One of the longest, on-going health study is the Framingham Heart Study which began in 1948. It continues even today in order to evaluate factors that affect cardiac health. The final assignment uses a subset of data from the Framingham Heart Study (“Statistical Methods in Epidemiology” by H.A.Kahn and C.T.Sempos). The data set was downloaded from the DASL data library. It contains five variables for 1,406 subjects. Those variables are:
Cholesterol: Serum cholesterol at first exam Age: Measured in years Sex: A string variable that is “MALE” or “FEM” SBP: Systolic blood pressure at first exam DBP: Diastolic blood pressure at first exam CIG:
Number of cigarettes smoked/day at first exam Using this data set and the appropriate statistical tests, answer these two questions: 1. Is there a difference in the mean number of cigarettes smoked by males and females?
2. Is there a relationship between systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure? Be sure to include basic descriptive statistics and charts and/or tables to aid in your interpretation. Please submit two files to the classroom: your SPSS output file and a Word file with your findings.
