The Brief Wondrous Life Of Oscar Wao

INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES
ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS

“The Brief Wondrous Life Of Oscar Wao.”

Please include your name, class and and school email address where I can reach you.

You must not use any outside sources, websites, summary sites or prewritten essays from anyone else. Remember if you can find it online, I can find it online. Your professors use a software app for colleges designed to detect plagiarism. You fail both the assignment and the class if you do not do your own, original work. This must be entirely your own thoughts and assessments, supported by quotes and examples from the novel. If you do not follow these policies you risk failing the class.

Your essay must be typed, double-spaced, and in MLA style. You must use examples and quotations from the book to support your point and cite each one correctly—for example: (Diaz 34).

Answer all 3 essay questions from the list below. You must use specific examples from throughout the text to support your points. Each answer you provide should a minimum of 4 well-constructed, mechanically/grammatically correct paragraphs.

1.   What is the fuku? In your opinion how does the fuku affect Beli, Lola, and Oscar? Who suffers the most from the fuku, in your opinion, throughout his or her life and who suffers the least? Use examples from the book to support your views. Be specific.

2.   Discuss the theme of love in the novel as it relates to Beli, Yunior, Lola and Oscar. Who seems to value love the most? Who is it most important to? Who seems to value it least? Whose life has been made “better” by love and whose life has been made miserable by love or the loss of love? Be specific. (You may include romantic love, family love, “love” for a friend, love for a child, etc.)

 3.   Why in your opinion is the book primarily narrated by Yunior? What does the story of the Cabral family gain by being told by an “outsider?” What do you think the novel loses or lacks by being told by someone outside the family? If you had a choice, whose point of view would you have rather heard this story told from? Explain. Use examples. Be specific.
