Question 1 (20 marks) The developers of a new educational programme claim that it results in improved academic performance. A psychologist recruits a school class consisting of 20 pupils and asks the teaching to administer the three month long programme, in order to evaluate these claims.
The psychologist is particularly interested to determine whether any improvements are sustained. The pupils are tested three times over a six month period; immediately before the programme begins (baseline), at three months (completion) and at six months (follow-up).

Each participant reported their monthly salary (before tax) and completed questionnaires designed to measure the stress associated with their role, their adaptability (ability to cope with change) and their job satisfaction.

He also wanted to determine whether any influence of music depends on the exercise being performed. He recruited 25 individuals who run regularly and 25 individuals who swim regularly.
He asked the participants to indicate their level of perceived effort after 30 minute sessions of their preferred sport; on one occasion they listened to music and on another occasion they didn’t (the order of these sessions was counterbalanced).
