Tableau In-class Graded Activity 

The purpose of the in-class activity is to test the course concepts in combination with the skills you have learned in Tableau. The goal is to take a simple bar chart and transform it into an improved visual as well as create additional visualizations to create it into one interactive dashboard. Please familiarize yourself with the instructions to see what you will be tested on before the in-class activity and practice with the global super store data set. The data for these charts will be provided in-class to complete this activity. 

1. Look at the Data 

- Go into the Data Source Tab and write a few comments on what this data is about and could show? 

(Hint: The Unit for Direct & Indirect Sales is Number of Days)

A. Transforming Original Bad Visualization 

- Format chart A by removing the vertical grid lines, reformatting the axis and axis titles 

- Now format the chart as you wish to incorporate concepts from class and list below the changes made in the chart and which class concepts it illustrates

B. Create a Line Chart 

- In a new sheet you will create a line chart called: Time to Close Deal (Improved) 

- View the final visual below for guidance 

- The Line Chart will compare the amount of direct vs. indirect sales for each month (Hint: the dual axis feature will need to be used) 

- Add an interactive parameter that establishes the company’s goal for number of days to close the deal, format accordingly and display it on the sheet as a slider

- Show the label on the 3 highest points for indirect sales 

- Format and label all axis accordingly 

 

 C. Create a two stacked Dynamic Bar Chart that shows by how many days the company goal was met (if under) vs. missed (if-over) for both direct and indirect sales 

 D. Sales Missed KPI Indicator 

- We need to make a KPI indicator that tracks the amount of months that direct sales and indirect sales are above the company goal

- Utilizing the [Direct Sales Difference Calculated field] from chart C you can count the total number of months above the goal using a Fixed LOD expression 

- The Fixed LOD expression for missed Direct Sales is 

{ FIXED [Month]:IF  [Direct Sales Difference] > 0 then 1 else 0 END }

- Explain what this Level of Detail expression is doing and why it is fixed? 

- Now re-create the formula with indirect sales and create a KPI indicator as seen below by adding the formulas to the text box on the marks card 

- If you can’t see the KPI indicator fit it to the entire view
