Correlational Data Analyses

The purpose of this lab is to become familiar with the process of analyzing data sets generated from Correlational Levels of Research Constraint.

1. Use SPSS Computer Procedure 3 (in Canvas) to compute the correlation coefficient, r,

for the relationship between at least two scale variables:

a. Write the null and alternative hypotheses for the correlation

Compute the simple correlation for PHYSACTIV and

TEXTING; copy & paste output and write the degree and

direction of relationship

Give the p value and state whether or not the correlation was significant

Create a scatterplot of the correlations; copy & paste.

b. Write the null and alternative hypotheses for the correlation

Compute the simple correlation for SHYTOT & PCSOCIAL; copy & paste

output and write the degree and direction of relationship

Give the p value and state whether or not the correlation was significant

Create a scatterplot of the correlations; copy & paste.

2. Use SPSS Computer Procedure 4 (in Canvas) to compute the Chi Square analysis for

the relationship between two nominal variables:

a. VIDEO EXAMPLE (USE the dataset Chi Square Star Wars.sav), Write the null and alternative hypotheses for the correlation and set alpha

Who has seen Star Wars movies more, women or men?

Ho: Men and women will have seen Star Wars movies at the same rate.

H1: Men and Women will have seen Star Wars movies at a different rate. (2

  tailed)

H2: ………. at a higher rate. (1 tailed)

α = .05

Run a Chi Square analysis for GENDER and STARWARS; copy & paste

the output and highlight the value for χ²

Highlight the p value and write whether or not the correlation is significant

Highlight the effect size value

b. Write the null and alternative hypotheses for the correlation

Run a Chi Square analysis for GENDER and STRANGERTHINGS; copy & paste

the output and highlight the value for χ²

Highlight the p value and write whether or not the correlation is significant

Highlight the effect size value
