To supplement the textbook presentation of true experiments with an application of the method to a simple motor task

INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES
ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS

Effects of Feedback on Performance

Purpose:

To supplement the textbook presentation of true experiments with an application of the method to a simple motor task and the use of appropriate statistics to evaluate the data with respect to the null hypothesis.

Procedure:

IV is degree or level of feedback on a motor task (DV). IV has 3 levels or amount of feedback on performance on line drawing accuracy. These are:

• No feedback: no information on subjects’ performance is given to them.

• Low feedback: subjects are told if their response was above or below the standard line after each attempt, but not by how much they were off

• High feedback: subjects are told exactly how far their response was above or below the standard line each time.

DV:

how far, in inches, the subjects’ final line is from the standard or comparison line on the 3rd trial (try) while being blindfolded.Someone in each group needs to measure and record the distance on the final try from the standard line; how much error there was.Because this will be an experiment (not correlational or quasi-experiment), I will show you how to truly randomly assign subjects to level of the IV using a table of random numbers. (This will be painful.) This should balance out preexisting differences inability to match the standard line so all 3 groups are equally good, or bad, at the beginning. Thus differences can be traced to the IV alone. That’s the  theory. Talk about the project with others if you need to, BUT write up below to be done by each student. Please type (and save) and submit on Blueline. (See next page.) I’ll leave a video emphasizing some key points about this assignment.

1. From ch. 9:

Use SPSS for analyzing your results for the effect of the IV on the DV: Analyze, then Compare means, for differences between groups. Use ANOVA design because you have 1 IV and it has 3 levels. T-tests are illegal in this situation; only with 2 means do we use t. Wouldn’t hurt to review those few pages in chapter 9 dealing with ANOVA with 1 IV.What were the 3 means and standard deviations (by condition):

No feedback: M = S =

Low feedback: M = S =

High feedback: M = S =

2. Think about these things first:

• What decision do you make about the null and alternative hypotheses from your data and statistical analysis? We always end up doing this.

• What statistical test did you use and

• what was the value of the statistic and

• its p-value?

• Now integrate this information from above. How did you use the information to inform your decision about H0 and H1

3. Things to answer:

The null hypothesis is: ____________________________________

_________________________________________________________

The research hypothesis is: _________________________________

_______________________________________________________

The statistic used (type of test) and its obtained value – the outcome of the statistical test

This are from the SPSS output window

Stat:______________________________________

Value: ______________________________________

Its p-value __________

Did you accept or reject Ho? Why did you reject or not reject Ho?

_______________________________________________________

4. Post-hoc tests:

Which conditions or IV groups were significantly different from each other, if any? Explain why you think they were different. Your conclusions should be justified by the results of the post hoc tests and you should communicate them to me in your answer. For maximum credit make it very clear to me you understand the process and can communicate it to me with ambiguity or “you know what I meant”.
