Descriptive Statistics

A group of 20 friends are competing for fun in order to increase their daily step count (calculated as the average daily steps over a seven day period). Half of the friends have a Fitbit and the other half have an Apple Watch. For the Values, enter 1 = Fitbit, 2 = Apple. Each friend compared their average daily step count in the week prior to the competition (the “Baseline” week) to their steps during the competition (denoted as “Competition”) to determine if competing against each other raised their step count. Enter their data below then compute a new variable showing the “change” in their step count.

Calculate Change in Daily Step Count

Transform Compute Variable Enter “change” for the Target Variable then enter the formula in the Numeric Expression box:  (Competition - Baseline)/Baseline * 100

Please answer the following questions regarding your analysis of the data.

2. What is the MEAN age for the total group of participants? ______ What is the MEAN age for the Fitbit group?  ______ For the Apple group?  _______

3. What are the overall MEANs and STANDARD DEVIATIONs for the Baseline and Competition daily step count?

Baseline:  M = ________, SD = _________

Competition:  M = _________, SD = _________

4. What are the MEANs and STDEVs for the Competition steps for the Fitbit group?  For the Apple group?

Fitbit:   M = _________, SD = __________

Apple:  M = _________, SD = __________

5. What is the MEAN % change in daily step count for the Fitbit group? ________ For the Apple group?  ________  For all 24 participants? _________
