Homework 5: Factorial ANOVA and ANCOVA

Use the Birth Order data to answer Problems 1 – 5.

Although you are already familiar with this data, let’s put it into some context. Fifty-two participants enrolled in a motivational seminar given by Tony Robbins. Prior to attending the seminar, demographic information was collected on their gender and birth order (relative to other siblings) and they took the Rosenburg Self-Esteem Scale (selfesteem_pretest). They took the Rosenburg Self-Esteem Scale again the day after they attended the seminar (selfesteem_posttest) and one year later (selfesteem_followup).

Problem 1

Use a factorial ANOVA to test the following hypotheses:

There is no difference in posttest self-esteem between males and females (gender).

Birth order has an effect on posttest self-esteem.

Gender moderates the effect of birth order on posttest self-esteem.

If there is an interaction, be sure to test for simple effects instead of reporting the main effects. Also, conduct post hoc tests if there is a main effect or simple main effect for birth order.  Report results in APA format.

Problem 2

Use a factorial ANOVA to test the following hypotheses:

There is no difference in self-esteem between males and females.

Self-esteem improves after participants attend the motivational seminar (test all three levels of self-esteem).

Gender moderates the effect of the seminar on self-esteem (again, test all three levels of self-esteem).

If there is an interaction, be sure to test for simple effects instead of reporting the main effects. Also, conduct post hoc tests if there is a main effect or simple main effect for self-esteem over time.  Report results in APA format.

Problem 3

Use a one-way ANOVA to compare self-esteem at posttest between the four different birth orders. What is the result? Report the result in APA format and include relevant SPSS output.

Use an ANCOVA to compare self-esteem at posttest between birth orders after controlling for self-esteem at pretest. What is the result? Report the result in APA format and include relevant SPSS output.

What happens to the result when the covariate is included?

Note: Include post hoc tests if necessary.

Problem 4

Use a two-factor ANOVA to compare self-esteem at posttest between birth orders after controlling for gender. What is the result? Report the results in APA format. Include relevant SPSS output.

Note: Include post hoc tests if necessary.

Problem 5

Use G*Power to find the minimum number of participants for each statistical test based on an alpha of p < .05,  80% power, and the effect sizes you estimated above. For parts 1 and 2, don't worry about the simple main effects.

1. Using the effect sizes from Problem 1, what are the sample sizes needed to find significant effects for (a) the main effect for gender, (b) the main effect for birth order, and (c) the interaction between gender and birth order?

2. Using the effect sizes from Problem 2, what are the sample sizes needed to find significant effects for (a) the main effect for gender, (b) the main effect for time of observation, and (c) the interaction between gender and time?

3. Using the effect sizes from Problem 3.2, what is the sample size needed to find a significant effect for birth order after accounting for pretest?
