Parameters:
The class project is designed to reinforce the material learned in class and to ensure the student has a working level knowledge of at least one database tool. In addition, it incorporates basic project management. The students will work in teams (up to 3) or as individuals to develop a system that does one of the following:
• be used by a manufacturer to cost and price inventory items related to a manufactured product.
• handle transactions for point of sale and inventory control, or
• process data about some kind of customer interface (customer service, technical support, etc.)
The system must have at least 10 entities and working relationships between them. Some of the case study examples found within the textbook may be good starting points for a transaction system or other customer interface.
If you have an idea from work, club, or hobby that is fine as well as long as the objectives and deliverables of the project are met.
Scenario: We are a small branch office of a mid-size software engineering firm located in an obscure cubical farm in a non-descript Federal Office building. We were working on a Department of Defense contract on a standalone network. When the pandemic hit, our office building was shut down and we were not able to do meaningful telework. The firm carried us as long as they can, but we have to figure out a way to be productive until we can get back to our original contract.
About a week ago, we were called to one of those “Town Hall” meetings where the CEO started out his pre-rehearsed spontaneous speech with “My friends and colleagues”. (These speeches generally do not bode well) We were basically told that the firm will make its marketing and sales resources available to us but that we need to have sellable software ready to hit the market by the day after Thanksgiving. The only tools we will have available is our personal computers and some Oracle Application Express (APEX) accounts that were available from a cancelled database class.
For this scenario, I am your first line manager. I need you to break up into 1-3 student groups and come up with something that you can program and sell. Our future employment is in your hands
