During weeks 3-5 inclusive as a class we looked at digital disruption, digital transformation and certain emerging technologies that are impacting the accounting function and wider business environment at present.
Henkel (https://www.henkel.co.uk/) is a German multinational chemical and consumer goods company. They have three business units – Adhesive Technologies, Beauty Care, and Laundry and Home Care. In 2011, the company embarked on digital transformation (DT) within its Laundry and Home Care unit, specifically on its supply chain and manufacturing operations. Their experiences are outlined in the case study ‘Henkel: A Digital Transformation Journey’ (available on canvas).
Assume you are an accountant in a business partner role, utilise this case study and other suitable resources to prepare a report to Dirk Holbach (Corporate Senior Vice President of Supply Chain at Henkel Laundry) which addresses the following:
1. What key success factors (best practice) do you believe existed in Henkel when they were pursuing their DT journey on its supply chain and manufacturing operations with the Laundry unit? Answers should be provided for the following four perspectives – Management, Finance, Technology and People. (This section should be approx. 30% of report)
2. The company are considering implementing 5G, Blockchain and AI, outline the advantages and disadvantages of each of these technologies for Henkel. (This section should be approx. 20% of report)
3. What would you recommend to Dirk Holbach regarding the 5G, Blockchain and AI proposals sitting on his desk, in order to progress further in the digital transformation journey? (I.e. which of the technologies would you implement, if any, and why?) (This section should be approx. 30% of report)
4. What opportunities do you see to extend digital transformation within Henkel? (This section should be approx. 20% of report)
10% of the marks will be awarded for overall presentation and referencing within the report.
Your report should include an Executive Summary to include no more than 250 words, be professionally written, and be presented in Microsoft Word. Maximum word count should be 2,500 words, including the Executive Summary but excluding charts, tables and references.
Requirements 1-4 will be marked in line with the conceptual equivalents, while the 10% for presentation and referencing will be marked in line with the rubric on canvas.
You may cite any useful academic and practitioner references (guide 5-10) in your work and references should be included in a separate reference list at the end.
The following penalties for late submission will apply: ‘Assessed work submitted after the deadline will be penalised at the rate of 5% off the assessed mark awarded for each working day late up to a maximum of five working days (i.e. Monday to Friday excluding days of official University closure) after which a mark of zero will be awarded’.
