The report should consist of the following sections:
What problems are being looked at in the study? What is the importance of the study?
What are the features of the variables being considered in the study? Are there any interesting features? Do some of the variables seem to be related? Is there a good way to visually display the distribution of some of the important variables?
Why did you choose to use the methods that you did? How did you arrive at the final model? What criteria did you use? Were there other models that you considered?
Did you examine the appropriateness of your model as far as meeting the required assumptions? What did you find?
This is probably the most important Section. What conclusions can be drawn from the analysis in terms of the original questions posed in the study? Give a clear recommendation to the political scientist using statistical findings to support your recommendations.
Your grade for the written report will be based on the following:
Did you present appropriate tables/figures/results? Did you get at the important results without overloading the reader with less meaningful results?
Did you explain the important statistical concepts in a clear and logical manner? Did you interpret your results correctly? Did you understand what the results tell you about the study?
Did you employ an appropriate analysis? Did your choice of the model make sense? Did you back up your results with strong statistical evidence?
After completion of your analysis and written report, you will meet with the Political Scientist (who will look exactly like your professor) for precisely 15 minutes. This meeting will serve to simulate a consulting statistician meeting, where the statistician is required to explain the results of the analysis to another professional. You will be given only 9 minutes to summarize your findings. You should be prepared to point out certain features of your results/report to back up your recommendations. For the remainder of the meeting, you will be asked questions about your analysis. During this time, you will be required to explain your results and defend your choice of analyses, as well as answer any questions of clarification that the executive may have. As in any professional meeting, it is important to be prompt and stick to the suggested timeframes. Therefore, you must be ready to present your results promptly as scheduled and you will be cut off after 9 minutes. SO BE SURE THAT YOU CAN EXPLAIN THE IMPORTANT PARTS OF YOUR RESULTS WITHIN 9 MINUTES.
