SPSS Final Exam:

  1.  Use SPSS to make a dataset for the data provided below.  Be sure to fully identify all of the variables (e.g. type of variable, label, values…) and enter all of the data. 
  2. Run the appropriate analysis to address the following hypotheses:
    1. There will be a relationship between physical development and emotional development after treatment.
    2. Physical development after treatment will be greater for boys than for girls.
    3. Emotional development after treatment will be greater for girls than for boys. 
    4. Regardless of which treatment group children were in, there will be improvement in physical development from pre-treatment to post-treatment.
    5. Physical development after treatment will be greater for those in the combined treatment group than for those in the other two groups.
  3.  Write 2-4 sentences citing the appropriate statistical information and explaining (briefly) what you found.  These sentences can be typed directly into the email that you send me with the dataset and output attached. 

A researcher completed a study of physical and emotional development in young children with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).  Children were randomly assigned to three groups.  One group received a hippotherapy (horses, not hippos!), one group received Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), and one group received both hippotherapy and ABA.  The following are the researcher’s data: 

Those in the hippotherapy group:

1.  3 year old, Caucasian female from a middle SES (socioeconomic status) family.  Her physical development score before treatment was 32.  Her physical development score following treatment was 40.  Her emotional development score after treatment was 45.  

2.  5 year old, African-American male from a high SES family.  Pre-treatment physical development score: 45.  Post-treatment physical development score:  48.  Post-treatment emotional development score:  34.
