1.      It is likely that the number of full-time sworn police officers depends on the local population. How do you think these may be related?  Write a set of testable hypotheses that predicts the direction of the relationship between these two variables.____________________________

2.      Conduct a Pearson correlation to test your null hypothesis. Explain the results in APA style. Remember that whether or not your hypothesis is supported depends on three things: 

a.      whether or not the coefficient was 0,

b.      whether your prediction of the hypothesized direction of the relationship (+ or -) was correct, and

c.       the significance (the probability that you will be wrong if you generalize your finding to the population from which the sample was drawn). Be sure to discuss all three in your explanation.____________________________

3.      Discuss the strength of the relationship between POPULATION and FT OFFICERS. Then, speculate about a second factor that might also influence the hiring of full-time sworn police officers.____________________________

 

4.      How much of the variance in FT OFFICERS is explained by POPULATION? Describe how you found out.______________________________

 

5.      Conduct a regression analysis of the relationship between POPULATION and FT OFFICERS at α = .05. Be sure to place your variables into their proper boxes (in other words, correctly identify the independent and dependent variable). Also, include relevant tables. If you do not correctly explain a table, do not place it in the report.  __________________________    

 6.      Do the results of the regression analysis suggest that your hypothesis is supported? If you were writing a scholarly report, how would you describe the relationship between these two variables based on your results? Be sure to discuss the magnitude of the regression coefficient, the direction (+ or -), and the probability.__________________________                                                   

7.      How many police officers does your model predict for a locality with 1.5 million people? What about 2 million people? Show how you calculated these predicted scores.__________________________    

8.      Add one or more predictors to your hypothesis and conduct another multiple regression analysis. Construct the regression formula. Explain what you found out.__________________________
