The Covid-19 pandemic is an event that has played havoc around the world for over a year. Local district authorities have issued a number of recommendations to the public to slow the spread of the virus through the population in their area. Each of these measures are claimed to combine to significantly slow the spread and deadliness of the disease.
You have been asked to investigate the claims above by analysing the data provided in order to recommend whether or not Islington council (a borough in central London) should implement similar measures.
You have two sets of data that you will need to analyse for this assignment.
1. The first dataset includes the responses of heads of CoVid-19 task forces in a selection of local district authorities across the UK to a questionnaire, which is included at the end of these instructions.
2. The second dataset includes data on cases and deaths from local authorities with similar population densities along with information on the measures they’ve implemented.
The purpose of this study is to discuss the validity of the claims made by the local district authorities and, in particular, to consider the appropriateness of adopting the measures outlined in Islington.
The assignment assesses how well you have understood the techniques taught in class and whether or not you are able to apply these techniques to a given situation. You are expected to write a report, around 6-8 typed A4 pages, detailing your analysis and its interpretation in light of the discussion above. The deadline for the report is Friday 23rd of April. I will provide feedback on your report if you submit it to me before Friday 16th of April.
The analysis should include the following, although you may also study other relationships as appropriate.
This data was collected from the head of Covid-19 task forces in local district authorities which have implemented each of the measures. In this dataset there are six variables, which are answers to the questions on the questionnaire at the end of these instructions. You should include:
• A brief description of the sample characteristics: the population density of the local district authority and what tier they are currently in. You can assume for the purposes of this assignment that the sample was chosen to be representative of the population.
• For each of the questions 3 to 6 you should analyse and interpret the responses with particular emphasis on the differences of opinions from the head of task forces of local authorities with a large population density and head of task forces from local district authorities without a low population density. You need to discuss clearly the differences between the responses using fully justified techniques.
This dataset has nine variables, detailed below:
• CASES: The total number of cases in that governing authority.
• DEATHS: The total number of deaths within 28 days of a positive CoVid-19 diagnosis in that governing authority.
• MORTRATE: The percentage of the population with the virus who died from it, i.e. the mortality rate.
• POPDENSE: A quantitive variable that takes give the population density in the governing authority area.
• MASK: A qualitative variable that takes the value 0 if the governing authority has not advised the use of face masks and the value 1 if the governing authority has advised the use of face masks.
• SHOP: A qualitative variable that takes the value 0 if the governing authority has not advised the closure of non-essential shops and the value 1 if the governing authority has advised the closure of non-essential shops.
• WFH: A qualitative variable that takes the value 0 if the governing authority has not advised that people work from home and the value 1 if the governing authority has advised people work from home
• DISTANCE: A qualitative variable that takes the value 0 if the governing authority has not advised people to observe social distancing and the value 1 if the governing authority has advised people to observe social distancing.
• SCHOOL: A qualitative variable that takes the value 0 if the governing authority has not advised the closure of schools and the value 1 if the governing authority has advised the closure of schools.
In your file you will be given the data for CASES, DEATHS, POPDENSE, MASK, SHOP, WFH, DISTANCE, and SCHOOL. The MORTRATE variable will need to be calculated by you using the TRANSFORM option.
1. Calculate the data for the missing variable
2. Perform a multiple regression analysis on the variables CASES and DEATHS with a choice of independent variables to determine whether the adoption of these measures has an impact on the number of cases and deaths due to CoVid-19.
3. Perform a multiple regression analysis on the variable MORTRATE with a choice of independent variables in order to determine whether the adoption of these measures has an impact on the mortality of the CoVid-19 virus.
The theme of this assignment is change management and your report should conclude with recommendation of steps you would take to help your company in the transition to the new way of working, based on the findings from the data.
Your report should be in the format of a cut-down management report consisting of the following sections:
• Title
• Executive Summary – a short (one or two paragraphs) abstract of the topic and the purpose of the report
• Introduction – a description of the topic in more detail, you should explain more of the background to the topic here. Again keep this short and to the point, you are being marked mainly on your analysis.
• Findings, Analysis and Discussion – the analysis and interpretation of the report
• Conclusions – a short description of the overall findings of your analysis including the validity of the claims made by the Living Wage Foundation
• Recommendations – a description of any issues that arise from the analysis and the benefits or drawbacks of introducing the living wage
• Bibliography – Harvard referencing please
The way you present the results of the analysis is important, SPSS tends to produce much more information than is needed to interpret an analysis – so don’t copy and paste tables from SPSS unless you intend to format them yourself.
Don’t use variable names; they have no meaning to someone who doesn’t have the data file – describe the results from your analysis using plain and easy to understand language.
