Assignment #2
You work at a weight management center and have implemented a new weight loss plan. You have two group of 20 participants who are all >50 pounds overweight. There are divided into two groups. The normal weight loss expected from a very low calorie diet (VLCD) plan is 10 pounds in 1 month. You have the data below of the weight loss from the two groups of people who participated in the new plan last month. You will determine in this assignment if the new weight loss plan more effective, less effective or the same as the traditional one?

1.Write your hypothesis statements for the null and the alternative hypothesis (10 points):
2. You will enter this data into an excel spread sheet. Your columns are the diet types that you will need to code (traditional VLCD diet can be group 1 and the new VLCD diet can be group 2) and the second column will be the weights. After saving this as an xlf file you can import your data to bright stat and upload. Once this is uploaded click on the Orange button that says Start Web APP. Click on the three horizontal lines for the files and choose to download a file (This is the one you created and uploaded in the screen before (5 points).
Attach a copy of your spread sheet.
3.Once your file is loaded, I want you to determine if you have a normal distribution.
You will need to run descriptive statistics to do this (found in the Analyze tab), and create a histogram (recalling from assignment #1). Create histogram as well and compare the two samples. You will need to determine the correct bin size based on the data (1,10,….). (50 points)
Please describe the shape, central location and spread of data. You should copy the data to your assignment here and provide a written description of what you have found. Be sure to discuss the mean, median, mode, kurtosis and skew. (NOTE: you will need to separate the two groups to analyze each sample or create a separate data file for this).
4. You should also perform a test of normality to further determine if you have a normal distribution of data. This test is found under the Analyze tab. What is it called and how do you use it to interpret normal distributions? Please provide the output below and write your analysis of this information. Is the data normally distributed? (50 points)
5. You will now analyze your hypothesis. You will want to choose the Compare Means option in analyze and determine which test is appropriate to choose. (75 points).
Display the output here:
Is this a one sided or two sided test?
What is the determined p level?
Are the results significant?
Is there a significant difference in weight loss between the traditional VLCD group a and the new? (Are you accepting or rejecting your null hypothesis)?
6. What is a type I and type II error? What do we do to try to prevent this? ( 10 pts)
7. Conclusion: This is one example of how you will use statistics in practice. (25 points). If you worked in this clinical would you change practice after analyzing these results?
What else might you like to include to increase the power and significance of the data? Also what are some potential confounding variables that could affect this analysis.
How many patients would we need to sample in this situation to achieve adequate power? You can download Gpower a free app that you can use to determine this.
