1. Validity. Messick (see attached articles) advocates a unified framework of validity that is different that past frameworks for validity research. In one paragraph, describe the philosophical change that Messick is advocating for (5 points). In the next 2 paragraphs, use the knowledge of an outcome measure / tool you reviewed for this course and briefly describe 1) what is known about the validity of the score, and 2) is the development of this outcome measure more consistent with Messick’s framework or more traditional framework(s) of validity (10 points). Finally, briefly describe a study– using Messick’s framework – (include a brief background/hypothesis if appropriate / methods (subjects / data analysis) / and how the results would advance the understanding of the score interpretation / use of the measure you are interested in (10 points).
2. Reliability is important as we want to minimize the error of the measures we use (we want high true score and low error!). Briefly describe 1) why it is incorrect to say “this test is highly reliable (or valid!)” (5 points) and 2) make a case for how the score interpretation for one of the instruments you reviewed may be sample specific. In other words, what is unique about the patient/subject population of the sample you reviewed (be persuasive here!) and how those characteristics introduce error variance into the score different from another patient population. (10 points)
a. Using the SEM formula, describe how error and variability (both are error!) impact SEM calculations. (8 points)
b. How does a calculated SEM value become incorporated into a MDC value? Now explain the difference between an SEM and MDC. In other words, what does one tell you that the other does not? (8 points)
c. Describe how SEM changes across the continuum of the test’s score range. Why is this important to understand? (8 points)
3. Describe the 5 requirements of good measurement/measures – and briefly describe what each means (don’t just list out 5 – but describe each one). (10 points)
4. Briefly interpret the following 3 data tables / figures.
a. For fig 1, describe 4 aspects covered in class (8 points)
b. For fig 2, identify the potential problem in the figure and what would be ideal – and why would it be ideal. (8 points)
c. For fig 3, identify the infit / outfit problem(s) in the data and describe why these are problems. (10 points)
