Problem 2  ADNOC Refinery (5 pt)

The ADNOC refinery produces 3 kinds of petrol (Super98, Special-95, and Plus-91). Each by a traditional oil-blend process that mixes three types of crude oil (Brent, Brent-Sweet, and Brent-LX) feedstocks in a traditional refinery refine/cracking process. ADNOC can purchase up to 5,000 barrels of each type of crude oil every day.

The selling price per barrel of petrol and the purchase price per barrel of crude oil are given in Table 1 below.

The three types of petrol differ in their octane rating and their impurity content. Crude oil contains impurities (water, oxy- or nitro-compounds, sulfur etc.); impurity is expressed as a percent. The crude oil blended to form Super98 must have an average octane rating of at least 10 and contain at most 1% impurity. The crude oil blended to form Special-95 must have an average octane rating of at least 8 and contain at most 2% impurity. The crude oil blended to form Plus-91 must have an average octane rating of at least 6 and contain at most 1% impurity. The octane rating and impurity content of the three types of crude oil are given in Table 2 below.

It costs $4 to process (refine) 1 barrel of oil into 1 barrel of petrol, and the refinery can produce up to 14,000 barrels of petrol daily. The refinery’s government customers require the following amounts of each petrol: Super98, 3000 barrels per day; Special-95, 2000 barrels per day; Plus-91, 1000 barrels per day. ADNOC is the national oil company so the CEO considers it a national obligation to meet government requirements over commercial requirements.

ADNOC has learned about digital advertising to stimulate government and commercial demands, and for this they have hired Mr. Alan Clay (US). Clay works out that each dollar spent daily in advertising a particular type of petrol increases the daily demand (govt.) for that type of petrol by 10 barrels.
