3.      Sample size

a.       Total number of doctors working in Fiji in 2019 – 917 doctors.

b.      Total number of questionnaires returned – 523 questionnaires.

c.       Analysis – 496 questionnaires. Twenty-seven were not analysed as the questionnaires were returned unfilled or had incomplete answers.

d.      Using Cochran’s formula and previous burnout prevalence data among surgeons in Fiji of 64% a sample size of 354 doctors was required to estimate the prevalence of burnout among doctors in Fiji within 5% of the true value with a 95% confidence interval.

e.       For the current study 496 doctors returned questionnaires out of 917 doctors eligible to take part in the study giving a response rate of 54% (496/916) 

4.      Independent variables.

The sociodemographic and work environment section included the following variables which included – age, gender, marital status, presence and age of kids, level of medical qualification, type of registration from medical council, duration of work, place of work, medical officer cadre level, type of speciality, trainee level status, total number of hours worked in a week, number of stay-in-home on-calls, number of stay-in-hospital on-calls, shift duty, number of night shifts per month, number of working weekends per month,  and sick leave days, alcohol consumption, and smoking.  Supplementary questions would include history of suicidal ideation in the last 6 months, desire to resign in the last 6 months, awareness of counselling services, exercise routine, and provision of adequate resources at work.
