Assignment 3

Overview

The entire assignment can be done in a single SAS program.  Turn-in the SAS program and answers to each of the questions.  You do not need to include any output; if you do it should only contain information that answers a question.

Remember to answer any questions that are in italics.

Advice: You may want to run the program after each step and make sure that portion of the program works correctly before adding to the program to do the next section.

  1. Create a SAS dataset called wtsbp reading the following variables from tomhs.dat:

ptid, age, sex, marital, wtbl, wt6, sbpbl, sbp6 .

  1. Compute two new variables in the DATA step: change in weight and change in systolic blood pressure. Call the variables wtdif and sbpdif.  The formula for wtdif is:

wtdif = wt6 – wtbl;  Define sbpdif in a similar manner.

Note: by computing the differences in this way negative values will indicate a decrease from baseline and positive values will indicate an increase from baseline.

  1. Use a procedure that displays the counts and means for change in weight and change in blood pressure. What was the average weight change? How many missing values are there for wtdif and sbpdif? Using PROC SGPLOT create a histogram for change in weight.

  1. Use a procedure that displays the means in part 3 separately for men and women. Which sex had the greatest average decrease in weight? Using PROC SGPLOT create side-by-side box plots for men and women.

  1. Losing weight should reduce blood pressure. Explore this by analyzing the variables wtdif and sbpdif using proc sgplot, proc corr, and proc reg.  What is the correlation between wtdif and sbpdif.  What is the regression equation? (Note: sbpdif should be the dependent variable).

  1. Run proc univariate for the variable wtdif. What are the 25th, 50th, and 75th percentiles of weight change?

  1. Run the proc univariate procedure from item 6 with the ODS TRACE ON/LISTING statement before the procedure. Looking at the output generated what are the names of the different pieces of output in proc univariate? What ODS statement would be needed to display only the portion of output containing the percentiles?

  1. Use a procedure to display the cross-tabulation of patients by marital status and gender. What is the percentage of men that are currently married? What is the percentage of women that are currently married?  See the dictionary for the categories of marital status (Note: You need to take care in reading off the correct percentage). Use PROC SGPLOT to create a bar chart of each category of marital status.

Marital status:  1=Never married, 2=Separated, 3=Divorced, 4=Widowed, 5=Married
