INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES
ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS

Assignment 1

Please use “asthma” dataset for this assignment. A total of 213 persons from a rural community in Newfoundland were randomly selected to study sex difference in lung function among adults (age>=18 years). The asthma dataset contains the following variables:

Sex (Male vs Female)

SMKSTAT (smoking status) 1: current smoker; 2: former smoker; 0: never)

Age (age at the time of survey)

FEV1 (Lung function test: forced expiratory volume in one second).

1. Please provide the SAS codes for reading the asthma dataset into SAS RAM including the path.

2. Please provide proper descriptions as well as the SAS codes for each of the following variables: sex, smkstat, age and fev1.

3. Please create dummy variable for sex (female as the reference) and smkstat (current smoker as the reference) provide the SAS codes.

4. Can sex significantly predict fev1 in this adult population? Please provide the SAS codes, relevant outputs, null hypothesis, statistics, and interpretation of the statistics. Can we use T statistics?

5. Can smkstat significantly predict fev1 in this adult population? Please provide the SAS codes, relevant outputs, null hypothesis, statistics, and interpretation of the statistics. Can we use T statistics?

6.Can Age significantly predict fev1 in this adult population? Please provide the SAS codes, relevant outputs, null hypothesis, statistics, and interpretation of the statistics. Can we use T statistics?

7. Can Sex and Age together significantly predict fev1 in this adult population? Please provide the SAS codes, relevant outputs, null hypothesis, statistics, and interpretation of the statistics.

8.Can Sex significantly predict fev1 under the control of age and smkstat in this adult population? Please provide the SAS codes, relevant outputs, null hypothesis, statistics, and interpretation of the statistics. Can we use T statistics?
