1. Develop a research proposal for thesis/dissertation research.
A research proposal is a plan including Introduction (topic and significance of the topic) and Research Design (participants, data collection, instrument, Human Subject Form, etc.). Thesis-pursuing students should take this track as an individual project to produce a draft research proposal that you can present to your thesis committee.
You may conduct an empirical research project to observe users. You can also replicate a published research project to confirm or refute its findings. Find a topic with a focus. Here are examples of areas as a starting point:
Use of electronic resources by [a user population]
Diversity and inclusion in library services
Is there a gender difference in Social Network behaviors?
Effect of information presentation on user behavior
Impact of information technology in the workplace (e.g., system migration or adopting new IT)
Users’ attitude towards (or experience with) [a specific system or technology]
Do library collections serve their user population?
2. Write a critical review of empirical studies on a selected topic from a methodological perspective.
The review should include important studies on the selected topic of your interest. The critique should focus on research design and execution to evaluate the rigor of the research design. Examine closely if the chosen research approaches and strategies are appropriate. If there are firm connections between data and research questions (the empirical criterion), if the data collection and analysis are rigorously administered, and what might be the methodological limit that should be noted. For example,
How relevance is conceptualized and measured in empirical studies
Research on information seeking and use: methodological issues
3. Write a methodological paper
The paper can focus on an aspect of a research method, such as a data collection technique, an instrument, a strategy to increase the response rate, etc. Describe the method, illustrate with examples, identify its potential applications, address its strengths and weaknesses, and suggest how to improve rigor. For example,
The use of discourse analysis in LIS research (to examine the origin of the method, the assumptions underlying this method, its appropriate use or misuse by researchers as reflected in the published literature; derive your conclusions and recommendations to other researchers).
Current LIS research and research methods based on the research literature.
The missing elements in reporting research: Examine the published peer-reviewed articles.
Field experiments: how to improve reliability and validity.
Emerging methods in LIS research, such as crowdsourcing data collection, citizen science.
