Scenario 1 –  An investigator is looking at the effect of two interventions in a 24 week treatment period for alcohol abuse in the college setting.  Both undergraduates and graduate students at the University of Nevada in Reno were eligible to participate in the active treatment, where those included for randomization were students who:

Experienced some consistent recent episodes of alcohol abuse including passing out, citation for public drunkenness,  sickness related to alcohol use, faulty memory related to alcohol use.

Recent episodes happened during the past semester.

Our interests are as follows:

1. The effect of the interventions in treating alcohol abuse over the 24 week period.

2. The scheduled assessments were set up to straddle the fall and spring semester.  As expected attrition did occur.  Can you examine the impact of the attrition on the above item.

Please include: a discussion of the longitudinal nature of the data and how your analysis is accommodating it.  Interpret your results completely in answering item 1 and item 2.

Variables in the Data Set:

Patno – Patient identifier

TX: 0 = Montherapy TX, 1=Combined Therapy TX.

TIME 0-6 for where each timepoint is separated by 4 weeks.

ALCABUSE – Psychometric scale summarizing alcabuse in the past month (4 week, where higher scores indicate more abuse).

Scenario 2 – You are given the following data description:

Bladder Cancer Recurrences

Description :  178 records

     Data on tumor size for bladder cancer.

   subjid:      Patient id

       rx:      Treatment 1=placebo  2=thiotepa

       size:    4-level grading scheme

  evalmonth:  Evaluation Month

Patients were to be evaluated over a 90 days window providing data at baseline month = 0 through day 90 month = 3 at 30 day intervals.  

Conduct the analysis on the treatment effect on tumor size.
