INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES
ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS

Assignment : samples, populations, and distributions Your assignments should be handed in as a pdf. Your assignment should include written responses to all of the assignment answers, as well as any figures or tables necessary to explain your results. All figures and tables should be accompanied by figure captions. The standard rule is that a figure caption should be able to fully explain what a figure is showing without the reader having to refer to the rest of the text. If you are unsure of what a caption should look like, read

You should also submit an R script (saved as a text file with the .R extension) capable of recreating all of the results you mentioned in your report, including comments on what different parts of the code are written to accomplish.

There is no fixed minimum length for this assignment, but I expect it to take 3-4 pages (single-spaced), including writing and figures, to answer. Your assignment should not be longer than 6 pages. I also expect reports to be written in full paragraphs (not bullet points), with all descriptions of what you have done clearly explained. As part of what you are learning in this class is how to communicate statistics clearly and effectively, I will deduct marks for excessively verbose or unclear writing that does not address the questions in the assignment, and for not using technical terms appropriately.

Also remember that each person has to hand in their own reports. You are welcome to discuss the assignment with your group or other classmates, but you are not allowed to share your assignment itself with each other, or to disseminate this assignment to anyone outside the class.

Question 1:

A) The data set you will be using in this assignment is 101 measurements of length and number of eggs of individual female Lake Trout (a fish species) sampled from Lake Superior. The data collection methods used for this study are described in a 1993 technical report by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources; a pdf copy of this report is included with the assignment on Moodle. Read through this report, and answer the following two questions.

A) In your own words, summarize how the data for fish length and egg numbers were collected, including where and when data was collected, what methods were used to collect the data, and any data processing steps (calculations) that the author used to produce the data, citing the technical paper as needed. Identify what measurement units both eggs and length were measured in, to what precision (number of decimal points) each measurement was recorded, and identify whether each measurement is continuous or discrete and whether it is interval or ratio.

B) Briefly explain what the goal of the study was. Explain what you think the target population and the study population were, based on information in the text. Identify at least one potential bias in data collection that might lead to the study population differing from the target population.

Question 2:

A) Using the LakeTroutEggs data set, create a table with the mean, median, standard deviation, and interquartile range for both eggs and total length (tl in the LakeTroutEggs dataset). This this table should include units and should round values appropriately.
