Create the the line chart of running total of sales by segment

INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES
ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS

Chapter 5.  Be sure to use the same Sample SuperStore data file as last week.  Be sure to save it as a packaged workbook

1. Create the the line chart of running total of sales by segment (page 109).

2. Create the Running Total Table on page 113.  You may need to switch the rows and columns (Your book calls it pivot the table.  To do so click the swap rows and columns icon or ctrl(cmd on Mac) w

3. Create the Figure 5.13 chart on page 120.

4. Create the Moving Avg Chart shown on page 122.  Note when I did it – I dragged the moving avg to the y-axis so that both measurements are on the same chart vs creating a dual axis chart.  Your choice.

5. We are next going to create a table that displays the sales for each year in several columns and the year-over-year (YOY) percentage change in the final column.

a. Create a Calculated Field, named 2015.

If Year([Order Date]) = 2015 then [Sales] else 0 End

b. Repeat step a except create the same formula for 2016.

c. Create a third Calculated Field, named YOY% Change which equals:

(SUM([2016]) - SUM([2015])) / SUM([2015])

d. From the Measures pane, drag 2015 to Text.

e. In the Measures pane, double-click 2016 and YOY % Change fields, in that order.   Note:  If you are using a different version of the sample super store data you may have to use different years.  If you get zero values, check your data to see your available years.

f. Format the YOY% change as decimal.  One way to do this is to right click the YOY%.  Select format – If the YOY field is not selected – click on fields and select it.  Change the fomat to percentage.  The solution is shown on the right.

6. For LOD expressions.  I couldn’t think of any different ones for you to try.  Tableau’s website http://www.tableau.com/about/blog/LOD-expressions has some good examples.  Using the SuperStore Excel file create the Customer Order Frequency Histogram.  When you are done it should look like the following.  I have provided a video in blackboard stepping you through this one.

Chapter 6 Maps

7. Create the density Map chart on page 136.

8. Create the pie chart map (figure 6.7) on page 139.

9. Create the embedded chart in tooltips (figure 6.11) on page 143

10. I personally love working with the maps so you are going to create a bunch of different types of maps.  Using the baseball image(1000px, 1000px) create the below map.  The following website: http://www.evolytics.com/blog/how-to-map-anything-in-tableau/ will help you with the steps.  I am a red sox fan, but you can create a map of any team you would like.  Be sure to hide the x and y values. Please note: you need to add your data source before you can add a background image

11. Add the wine excel file as data source. Using the wine excel file you will create a trip map to some of the wineries in CT.

Note: for this exercise, we will be using the Latitude and Longitude measures that are not generated in Tableau. These measurements will allow you to pinpoint the exact location of the wineries. I have created four trip or wine tours – they are indicated by the field Trip Name.  The order of the sites to visit are based on the order field.  I only set the order for the southwest trip.

a. Double click Latitude measure to place it on the Rows shelf

b. Double click Longitude measure to place it on the Columns shelf

c. On the rows & columns shelves change the Latitude and Longitude to a Dimension(click on each of the pills).  This will convert it from an average.  So each point is represented.

d. Drag Winery dimension to Label. This shows each winery’s location plotted by latitude and longitude

e. Drag the Trip Name to the Filter.  Select Southwest

f. Change the Marks type from Automatic to Line

g. Drag the Order of Visit measure to Path

12. Create your own trip map.  You can do a trip to ski resorts, golf courses, baseball stadiums, a European vacation.  Be creative, I always love seeing different trips.  You will need to create your own excel file, you may have to search for the longitude and latitude (the path sometimes won’t work with just the city).  You can get the latitude and longitude values from googlemaps just right click on a location.
