Midterm Assignment: Designing Business Intelligence Reports

In this assignment, you will learn how to analyse and create new reports that will be used by different people in the organization. Business intelligence reports are very important communication tools in managerial decision-making and are targeted to a variety of audiences that include accountants, finance professionals, marketers, salespeople, and product managers, among others. The relevance, utility and timeliness of presented information are critical for effective and efficient decision- making.

This exercise will provide you with a hands-on experience in understanding and building information-rich business reports.

PART I (40 Points)

Business Case

You have just started working as an analyst at Orion Star in the business intelligence department. Your manager has provided you with access to SAS Viya and asked you to provide information on how the Orion Star Product Report is built. Hint: you may include screenshots to help support your answers.

Questions from Management:

a) Before starting your analysis, you should access and investigate the dataset, i.e., understand and be familiar with the data set, including understanding the shape, and possible data issues. Provide detailed instructions on how this is achieved and a detailed description of the dataset. (12 points)

b) The Product Analysis page provides a summary of the products sold by Orion Star. Provide a detailed explanation of the objects on this page, including how and why they are created. (16 points)

c) The report designer of the Product Analysis and the Supplier Analysis pages may have used actions, filters and links. Provide a detailed explanation of any used actions, filters and links in these pages, and step-by-step instructions of how to set them up in SAS Viya. (12 points)

PART II (60 Points)

Business Case

You are the analyst at the business intelligence department of a retail, marketing and auditing consulting company and your new client is a Global Toys Corporation, one of the world’s largest toy manufacturers with operations across the globe. A few weeks ago, the company appointed a new Marketing Director, and in a recent presentation she announced a new strategy for some of the best-selling toy products.

You are asked to lead in developing a case study (a visual story line) that will help the executive team for better and faster understanding of the presented information. In the new director’s keynote, she wants to go over some facts about current business performance and then use that data to make the case for a new strategy. Additionally, the business intelligence department wants to present this report and require you to answer a series of questions.

The Visual Story Line

a) Explore the data and produce a report in SAS Viya for senior management and for the business intelligence department. This report should not contain more than two pages (not including the explanations required by the Business Intelligence Department).

This BI report should include key facts about the company’s performance on a global and regional level. These facts should include financial, marketing related data, and/ or efficient use of resources. (30 points)

Questions from the Business Intelligence Department:

b) Provide detailed explanations on how you chose your story line, what alternative story lines you considered and why you decided not to include them in your report. (15 points)

c) During your report design process, you must decide on the appropriate visualization tool/type to use based on the data you choose, and information you intend to portray. How did you choose the objects in your report (charts, tables, etc)? How will the charts be perceived by a non-technical user? What questions may he/ she ask and what answer(s) could he/she get with it? (15 points)

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

Instructions for report creation:

For Part I, navigate through the folders in SAS Viya (…-YVA185-Basics) to access the file with the Product Report of Orion Star.

For Part II, navigate through the folders in SAS Viya to access the file labelled INSIGHTTOY_1 in the TUNDATA folder.

Note that you may use MS Word to write the report with screenshots from SASViya, or build your report fully using SAS. However, the final file should be a PDF, hence, interactive elements will not show.
