News reporters from ABC call you for assistance analyzing the “Manners.sav” dataset.

INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES
ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS

News reporters from ABC call you for assistance analyzing the “Manners.sav” dataset.  This dataset consists of findings from a telephone survey on politeness in the U.S., conducted by ABC News. The actual wording of the questionnaire items and response options can be found on our course site (ABC Manners Survey).

The survey assesses the recent frequency of 4 different acts, which respectively can be considered as either polite or impolite.  These acts include holding the door open for a stranger (variable opendoor), using a swear word in public (variable swear), speaking in a rude manner to someone (variable rude), and displaying an obscene gesture to someone in public (variable gesture). Based cumulatively upon the answers to these 4 questions, it has been proposed that a person’s level of active politeness can be scaled (with 0 polite answers = Very Impolite, 1 polite answer = Slightly Impolite, 2 polite answers = Average/Neutral Politeness, 3 polite answers = Polite, & 4 polite answers = Very Polite).

The reporters are particularly interested in reporting whether politeness – categorized as ‘polite’ (politeness scale of 3 or 4) or ‘impolite’ (politeness scale less than 3) is related to demographic factors.

Your task is to complete table 1. This table will be featured in the results section of a manuscript for eventual publication. Furthermore, the reporters would like you to provide a brief summary of your results (no more than one paragraph) written for the lay public. In this summary, present your findings as if you are explaining the study results to someone naïve to public health and epi language.
