The website Our World in Data webpage has articles on many topics, including:
Demographic change, health, food and agriculture, energy and environment, innovation, poverty, living conditions, human rights and democracy, violence, and education. For each of these topics, there are many sub categories. Unlike many news sources, Our world in Data allows you to download the data behind most charts. Select a topic you are interested in and one or more subcategories from the same topic.
A) Select and copy three visualizations from the topic(s) of your interest. Use Tableau to create your visuals. The complexity of the visualizations to replicate is your choice. Provide screenshots from the original graph on the website and the one you created. Do not replicate complexity for the sake only of complexity. Think also about how effective the visualization is in presenting the data. Write a short paragraph that discusses the information each visualization presents and why you chose it.
B) Construct one visualization that is not on the website using the data from the website. Discuss why you chose this visualization and the insights it conveys. The most effective way to achieve this is to join two or more datasets from the website together but it is up to you how to create a new visual.
Paste screenshots of all visualizations in a word or pdf document and submit it. Submit also your Tableau document. Be ready to present/discuss your visualizations in class. The submitted pdf should have four charts, three replicas and one new that you created.
Grading Criteria for visuals in task A and B:
1) Effectiveness of the visual
2) Complexity of the visual
3) Amount of data presented
4) Level of interactivity replicated
5) Technical exposition
6) Decontati
