ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS

1. PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The goal of the term project is to grow students’ skills of applying mathematics in scientific research in the civil engineering field.

In this term project, you need to present one or more complex and advanced civil engineering problems and solve them. The mathematics involved in solving the problem is not necessarily limited to the content of this course. And you are permitted to select a research topic from your major and/or minor disciplinary area, such as transportation, construction, structural and earthquake engineering. The research problem and the associated solution process should have a certain degree of complexity matching the Master’s degree level.

The mathematics for solving the problem has to have computer elements. If numerical methods are involved in your problem, computer program applications or computer programming has to be presented. If your problem is to find analytical solutions, you shall use mathematics computer software such as MathCad, Mathematics, Maple, etc.

If you are unsure about what projects would be appropriate, please consult the instructor.

2. DELIVERABLE

The deliverable of the project is a written report in word and the accompany computer applications. The report should have a cover page and properly formatted. Bookmarks shall be included in the word report file for easy navigation of the report content, which shall at least include the following parts:

a) Abstract

b) Problem description and project objective

c) Mathematical analysis

d) Results and discussions

e) Conclusions (and possible future work)

f) References

Citation is an important part in scientific research. If you cite any journal papers, books, or web resources, make sure your list them in the references. If you use other’s figures in your report, make sure you cite the sources. The format of your reference should follow one of the widely- accepted citations systems, such as Oxford, MLA, ASA, APA, etc.
