Project Description and Rubric
Data Analytics via SAS
Project Description:
The project is designed so you can demonstrate the skills developed over the semester while investigating phenomena of interest. The project will also develop skills related to research utilizing previously collected data to provide insights related to your research question. The report should guide the reader through the results starting with either background information or the research question. Evidence should be provided to support the importance of the research question to gain the reader's interest. Guide the reader through the analytics starting with descriptive statistics displayed using appropriate graphics and tables. The research question should be transformed into a hypothesis that can be evaluated using the data and an appropriate statistical technique. Then explain the methods to be used and the results derived from applying the method. Finally, summarize the results in the conclusions or discussion sections. It is expected that at least two variables will be utilized in the analysis but more can be included.
For instance, a research question could be something like “Do rural counties in Georgia have a higher rate of infant mortality than urban counties?” The researcher would need to obtain data on infant mortality from the Vital Statistics along with demographics and other social-economic variables on the counties. Then classify the counties into rural or urban using an established definition such as proximate from a major city or population size. Then, compare the rates of infant mortality using appropriate techniques discussed over the course of the semester or more advanced techniques that you know.
The project will be evaluated on the following points:
The project should tell a story starting with the background and the research question leading into a summary of the variables related to the research question. Then, a formalized hypothesis should be developed that relate the variables of interest and an appropriate method selected to evaluate the results. Finally, summarize the results and findings.
Grading Rubric:
Overall writing (15 pts) · Free of spelling mistakes · Free of grammatical errors · Written so as to be understood by someone with little statistical training (as much as possible) · Document flows well when read from start to finish |
Descriptive Statistics (25 pts) · For Variable 1 (plot and summary) · For Variable 2 (plot and summary) · Comment on shape, spread and location (quantitative variables) or proportions (categorical variables) · For Variable 1 and Variable 2 together (summary and/or plot) · Comment on whether or not there appears to be a relationship based on the plot using variable 1 and variable 2 · Additional analysis can be completed to incorporate additional variables |
Methodology (20) · Appropriateness of methodology · Correct application of methodology · Concise description of the methodology |
Results (20 pts) · Provide the test-statistic and p-value for the hypothesis test · Correctly state the conclusion of the hypothesis test in non-statistical jargon · Interpret the results · Provide supporting information as needed such as confidence intervals |
Discussion (20 pts) · State how (if at all) your results could be generalized · Point out confounding variables · Comment on whether a cause-and-effect claim would be justified · Describe how the study could be extended. |
