You will write your report for the first phase of the consulting project to Governor Walz’s campaign staff. These are the aspects of the study that we want you to address in your writing. The directions for the executive summary to Governor Walz himself will be contained in another assignment distributed at a later date. Be sure to ask good questions on Friday, so that you can address all of these points in your write-up. The client will return to class the following Wednesday for any follow-up questions. Remember you are writing to a non-statistical audience. Your client needs to be able to understand your key findings so they can devise a campaign strategy based on your analysis.
Statement of Purpose (or research objective) - What is the goal of this research? What does Governor Walz’s staff want to know from the data?
Study Background - Write about why his staff is interested in studying this topic. What do they already know and what do they want to know from the data? How did they conduct the study and collect data?
Start by exploring the data set. What do tables and graphs of the data tell you? What interesting patterns did you observe? Discuss these findings and comment about what they may mean to Governor Walz’s reelection.
The details of the statistical analysis should be placed in the Appendix so that an interested reader can dig into the details. There, you will need to address the following:
Based on the study, what statistical model did you use to analyze the data?
What are the assumptions of this model? How did you assess them? Discuss whether the data met or do not meet these assumptions. If the data do not conform to the assumptions, what did you do next? Spend some time explaining the process but avoid statistical jargon.
Walk through the steps of testing the data.
Consider how you want to summarize the data in a meaningful way. For example, you should create a table to present to Governor Walz’s staff instead of cutting and pasting R output. Remember they do not know R!
You will need to interpret the results in the context of this study. That is, all statements of results need to be supported by data. And remember to interpret the results in a language that Governor Walz’s staff can understand.
What are the characteristics of Governor Walz’s supporters that are revealed by the data?
What are good strategies for voter outreach based on the data and your statistical results?
Do you think the study was conducted in a manner that generates reliable results? Explain your answer.
Do you think the study was conducted in a manner that leaves unanswered questions? If so, what are they?
Do you have any suggestions for further studies to confirm these findings and/or address shortcomings?
What is the one BIG takeaway from this study that you want Governor Walz and his campaign staff to know?
Organize your thoughts in a logical manner, use complete sentences, proper grammar, and correct spelling (run spell checker).
Remember to explain statistical terminology in clear, simple sentences.
Remember to keep your reader in mind when writing. You are writing to Governor Walz’s campaign staff. Do not assume they know much statistics beyond introductory statistics and do not know R.
Refer to features of the data by their natural language name, not how they are named in the data set. For example, avoid writing:
“the estimated effect of voter_age was…”
Instead use plain terminology
“The estimated effect of a voter’s age was…”
Do your own writing.
