how to interpret the relevant output and what it means in regard to your original hypothesis

INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES
ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS

Throughout the semester we are frequently looking at the results of data analysis, or running analyses as assigned to the class. For your data analysis report you will conduct Three hypothesis tests of your own choosing, and report the results of each of these findings in a short summary. Hypothesis test will have to focus on a bivariate relationship (relationship between one IV and one DV).

Your hypothesis tests will need to include each of the following:

1. Independent sample T-test or ANOVA

2. Chi-square test

3. Correlation

For your hypothesis tests you may use the (a) NELS data, Rikers data, Youth data, or Rand study data. All of them are available on Canvas (under the module SPSS work). You can use one, two or three data sets for three hypothesis tests.

For each hypothesis you will provide:

1. Hypothesis: Null and research (alternative) hypotheses

2. Rationale: A brief explanation of why you have ‘developed’ this hypothesis. Your explanation should be based on theories or empirical research evidence in the field of criminology, psychology, sociology, etc.

3. Method: First, include the (a) name of data you are using. Second, describe your (b) independent variable and dependent variable from the data of your choice and (c) measures of these variables including level of measurement and specific categories (if ordinal/nominal variable)

4. Your SPSS outputs (descriptive statistics tables, significance tests, effect size, post-hoc test (if you run ANOVA))

5. Conclusion: Your explanation of how to interpret the relevant output and what it means in regard to your original hypothesis.

6. References (APA format)

Over the course of the semester, we have been working with several key variables from these data sets during our practice sessions. Recall that we are using only a small fraction of the variables that are available from these data sets. You don’t have to repeat what we already analyzed during the class. Take the time to look at the variables in the datasets.

This project is intended to be a way for you to demonstrate your mastery of using SPSS and more importantly in interpreting the statistical output. a
