INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES
ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS

The purpose of this assignment is to use JavaFX to create a graphical user interface application. In this assignment you will use JavaFX TextField objects, Label objects, and Button objects. The application will create an use an HourlyEmployee class to track the hours worked as well as the hourly pay rate. The gross pay, taxes, and net pay will also be calculated. The user interface will enable the user to enter a name, the hours worked, and the pay rate.

Create a project named ProcessPayroll. Use a package name of edu.seminolestate.processpayroll. (You can substitute your domain name for edu.seminolestate if you wish.) Make sure you create a regular Java project in Eclipse not a JavaFX project.

Add the partially completed HourlyEmployee classPreview the documentView in a new window to the project. Add three methods to this class - computeGrossPay, computeTaxAmount, and computeNetPay.

Here is the class diagramPreview the documentView in a new window for the HourlyEmployee class. Your version of the HourlyEmployee class must implement (match) this class diagram.

Notice the HourlyEmployee class has three instance variables already declared - name, hours worked and hourly pay rate. Do not change any of the existing code in the HourlyEmployee class. Only add the code for the requirements below.

The computeGrossPay method must return a double representing the gross pay. Hours up to and including 40 are paid at the hourly rate. Any hours over 40 are paid at "time and a half". That is, these overtime hours are paid at 1.5 times the hourly rate. The numbers 40 (OT_HOURS) and 1.5 (OT_MULTIPLIER) are symbolic constants in the HourlyEmployee class. Use these constants in your calculation.

The computeTaxAmount must return a double representing the taxes due on the calculated pay. The tax is computed according to the following: gross pay up to (but not including) $1,000 is taxed at a .05 rate; gross pay up to (but not including) $5,000 is taxed at a .10 rate; gross pay up to (but not including) $10,000 is taxed at a .15 rate; gross pay of $10,000 or more is taxed at a .20 rate. NOTE: These tax rates are NOT marginal tax rates. We are making this simpler! All pay is taxed at a single rate. If the pay is 35,000 then the entire 35,000 is taxed at a .2 percent rate. If the pay is 4,500 then the entire 4,500 is taxed at a .10 percent rate.

The computeNetPay method must return a double representing the net pay. The net pay is calculated as the gross pay minus the tax amount.

Create the ProcessPayrollApplication class. This class will have the main method. The class must extend the javafx.application.Application class.

Create the user interface shown in this example.

User interface for payroll project.

End the application when the user clicks the Exit button.

Clear all the data in the TextField objects and Label objects when the Clear button is clicked.

Display the gross pay, tax amount, and net pay when the user clicks the Calculate button.

Use the data from the user interface to create a HourlyEmployee object. Use the HourlyEmployee object to call the computeGrossPay, computeTaxAmount, and computeNetPay methods. Format the returned values as currency. Use the NumberFormat class. Display these values in the user interface.

The user must enter an employee name. Display and use the value "No name entered" if the user clicks the Calculate button and no name was entered.

The hours worked must be a number and greater than zero. Catch the NumberFormatException if the user enters non-numeric characters. Display an error message in the hours worked TextField object. Display an error message in the hours worked TextField object if the user enters a valid number but it is zero or less.

The pay rate must be a number and greater than zero. Catch the NumberFormatException if the user enters non-numeric characters. Display an error message in the pay rate TextField object. Display an error message in the pay rate TextField object if the user enters a valid number but it is zero or less.

Note the HourlyEmployee class throws the IllegalArgumentException exception. You may need to catch this unchecked exception.

There are three buttons and you will need to implement an event handler for each.

Watch this video (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. to see how the application should work.

Add comments to the top of your source code for your name and the date. Do this for each class file.
