ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS

Problems 1-5 leverage the survival analysis methods we learned this week.

Problems 6-8 use methods learned previously for continuous and categorical variables.

Use the VA Lung Cancer dataset in JMP (n=137) for this problem (Note: there is a similarly titled dataset in JMP, VA Lung Cancer IC. They are not the same. Be sure to use the correct dataset.) In this study, conducted by the US Veterans Administration, male patients with advanced inoperable lung cancer were given either a standard therapy or a test chemotherapy.

Time to death was recorded for 128 patients; 9 left the study before death (censored). For these 9 patients, the length of observation time at which they left the study was recorded.

The primary goal of the study was to assess if the test chemotherapy is beneficial. Additionally, various covariates were also documented for each patient. Secondary goals included the analysis of covariates as prognostic variables. Time = time to death (if death occurs) or observation time (if censored); Treatment = standard, test; Cell Type = Adeno, Large, Small, Squamos; Prior = Yes (received another therapy prior to this therapy), No (did not receive prior therapy); Age = age of patient (in years)(continuous covariate); Diag Time = time between diagnosis of lung cancer and start of the study (in months) (continuous covariate); KPS = Karnofsky performance score that describes patient status at beginning of study (continuous covariate)
