As the main requirement, you will have to write a term paper, involving an empirical project with real data. The paper will count for 60 percent of the grade.Specifically, you are required to conduct original research, using data and econometric analysis technique to investigate a problem identified by you. This project requires brief identification of theory including a very brief introduction to the key literature (No Literature review!), data collection, model estimation, analysis and interpretation of results, and a critical reflection.

 

There are two deliverables associated:

(1) It must describe the problem you seek to investigate and provide a clear statement of your hypotheses. The key component of the proposal should be the Data Section. At a minimum, this section should identify the source of data you intend to use and briefly describe each variable in your data sample and summarize them in a table that reports summary statistics. The proposal is scheduled to be presented and discussed in class on 7 February. You should plan ca. 5-7 minutes PowerPoint presentation.

(2) Term paper. A 10-12 page paper (excluding tables, figures, cover page and references, Appendix), double-spaced using a 12-point font is due by 15 April. Among others, Wooldridge (Chapters 4.6 (pp. 154) & 19 (p. 668)) provides guidance on how to organize and write an empirical paper. Particular emphasis will be on interpretation and critical reflection of results. The data set and the program also must be handed in electronically. Late submissions will not be accepted. Papers failing to meet standards in terms of language and form will not be accepted.

Potentially, this project could also lead to / or be part of your first/second year paper. You may discuss this with your major professor. If you have trouble finding data, please come and talk to me – the sooner the better. Depending on your research interest, I may have some data available.
