1. For each of the following analysis strategies, describe a research scenario where the analysis procedure may be used: one way ANOVA, Kruskall-Wallis Test.
For the following problems (2 to 4),
Use SPSS to conduct the appropriate analysis. Report and interpret your analysis in 2-3 paragraphs. Include all relevant summary tables. In your write up, include:
a. The research problem
b. The null and/or research hypothesis (ses)
c. The criterion for rejecting the null
d. The test statistics;
e. Confidence interval
f. Effect size
g. Decision
h. Interpretation in the context of the research problem.
2. In a study of 90 patients on renal dialysis, Farhad Atassi (2002) assess oral home care practices. He collected data from 30 patients who were in dialysis for less than 1 year (Group 1), dialysis for 1-3 years (Group 2), and dialysis for more than 3 years (Group 3) The data (plaque.sav) shows plaque index scores for these 90 subjects. A higher score indicates a greater amount of plaque. Test the hypothesis that there are no difference in the amount of plaque among the three groups of patients. Use α=.05.
3. Thrombocytopaenia is a condition of abnormally low platelets that often occurs during necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) – a serious illness in infants that can cause tissue damage to the intestines. Ragazzi, et. al. (2003) investigated the differences in the Log10 of platelet counts of 178 infants with NEC. Patients were grouped into 4 categories: Infants with no gangrene (0), subjects in whome gangrene was limited to a single intestinal segment (1), patients with two or more intestinal segments of gangrene (2), and patients with majority of small and large intestines with gangrene. Determine if there are differences in the Log10 platelet counts among the 4 groups of infants (gangrene.sav). Use α=.01
4. In a study of healthy subjects grouped by age (Younger: 19-50 years, Senior: 65-75 years, and Longeval: 85-102 years), Hermann, et. al. (2000) measured their vitamin B12 levels (ng/L). All elderly subjects were living at home and able to carry out normal day-to-day activities. The data (VITB12.SAV) show Vitamin B12 levels for 50 subjects in the Young group, 92 Seniors, and 90 subjects in the Longeval group. Can you conclude, on the basis of these data, that the populations represented by these samples differ with respect to the median level of Vitamin B12. Use α=.01
