INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES
ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS
  1. Appearance counts.  Work with the table/figure layout until it is easy on the eye, and conveys a clear message.  See the online documents on data display by Gary Klass at http://lilt-vetri.lilt.ilstu.edu/gmklass/pos138/datadisplay/   Students often err by including too much color, or every detail.  Less is more!
  2. Each table and figure should have a title.  That title should say, succinctly, what the table or figure is displaying.
  3. Each column and row should be labeled, in English.
  4. Variables and constructs should be spelled out in English.  Say “Educational level”, not EDUC.
  5. Statistics should be rounded to a reasonable level of precision.  Mean age may be “67” or perhaps “67.5”, but never “67.543” – your reader can’t absorb that level of detail!
  6. When you have performed significance tests, show the results in the table (or figure).  Use symbols to indicate findings that are statistically significant at a particular criterion value, or include p-values, depending upon the audience that you’re addressing.  Footnotes should explain significance tests briefly.
  7. Number tables and figures consecutively.  Generally the two types are numbered separately.  So, a paper might have Table 1, Table 2, and then Figure 1, Figure 2, and then Table 3, and so on.  The ordering should match the ordering of the discussion of the data in the text.

If you have many detailed tables or charts that are not of primary importance, you may want to consider putting them in an appendix
